Amjad Islam Amjad


Amjad Islam Amjad (1940–2019) was a Pakistani poet, lyricist, and playwright. He was one of the most popular and influential poets of his generation, and his work has been translated into many languages.

Amjad was born in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1940. He studied at the Government College University in Lahore, and after graduating, he worked as a journalist and editor. He began writing poetry in the early 1960s, and his first collection of poems, Aaina (Mirror), was published in 1965.

Amjad's poetry is known for its lyrical beauty, its social commentary, and its humor. He was a master of the Urdu ghazal, and his poems often deal with themes of love, loss, and the human condition. He was also a prolific lyricist, and his songs have been sung by some of the biggest names in Pakistani music.

Amjad's plays are also well-known, and they have been staged all over Pakistan. His most famous play is Aangan (Courtyard), which tells the story of a family torn apart by Partition.

Amjad was a recipient of many awards, including the Pride of Performance Award from the Government of Pakistan. He died in Lahore in 2019.
