About Munir Niyazi

Munir Niyazi (9 April 1928 – 26 December 2006) was a Pakistani poet of Punjabi and Urdu language. He also wrote for newspapers, magazines and radio. In 1960, he established a publication institute, Al-Misal. He was later associated with Pakistan Television, Lahore and lived in Lahore till his death.

Niyazi was born in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, British India. He studied at the Government College University in Lahore, and after graduating, he worked as a journalist and editor. He began writing poetry in the early 1950s, and his first collection of poems, Der Kar Deta Hoon Main (I Keep Delaying), was published in 1957.

Niyazi's poetry is known for its lyrical beauty, its use of simple language, and its focus on themes of love, loss, and the human condition. He was a master of both the Punjabi ghazal and the Urdu ghazal, and his poems often use nature imagery to express his emotions. He was also a prolific writer of nazms, or free-verse poems.

Niyazi's poetry has been translated into several languages, and he is considered one of the most important Urdu poets of the 20th century. He was awarded the Pride of Performance Award by the Government of Pakistan in 1992.
