Born on 15 September 1919, the name of this person was "Mohammed Haider Khan" but hardly anyone is aware of his name, he was famous by the name of Khumar Barabankvi or Khumar Saheb. The great poet Khumar Barabankvi, who gave recognition to Barabanki district on the international stage, was also fondly called 'Dullan' by people very close to him.
"Khumar" studied till eighth standard from City Inter College of the city. After this, he passed the class 10 examination from Government Inter College Barabanki, which was recognized only till high school at that time. After this, he took admission in Jubilee Inter College, Lucknow but he was not interested in studies.
He started participating in mushairas from the year 1938 itself. Khumar read his first Mushaira in Bareilly. His first couplet was 'You are not aware of the effect of your eyes, ask this secret from some ruined eyes'. Within a span of two and a half years he became famous throughout the country.
His song 'Tasveer Banata Hoon, Tasveer Nahi Banati', written for the film 'Baradari', is still present in the hearts of people. He has worked for various films like 'Apne Kiye Pe Koi Tarat Ho Gaya', 'Ek Dil Aur Talbaagar Hai Bahut', 'Dil Ki Mehfil Saji Hai Chale Aaye', 'Saaj Ho Tum Awaaz Ho Main', 'Bhula Nahi Dena', ' May the aching heart be filled', Khumar Saheb also wrote four books, these books are Shab-e-Taab, Hadis-e-Digar, Atish-e-Tar and Rakhs-e-Macha.
In 1992, Khumar's fame and success was celebrated in Dubai. Jashn-e-Khumar was organized in Barabanki district on 25 September 1993. In which the then Governor Motilal Vora honored him with a sum of Rs 1 lakh and a citation.
The last days of Khumar were quite painful. He had stopped eating and drinking a year before his death. His condition became critical on 13 February 99. He was admitted to the Medical College, Lucknow. Where he breathed his last on the night of 19 February. Now he is not among us but his memories are still fresh in the minds of people.
